Google Changes Local Search
Google's local search has become Place Search and with the name change comes some dramatic changes in the results of local searches. Some small businesses may find an improvement in their ranking, but many will find it harder to compete.
Because only the top 3 listings are shown on the first page instead of the top seven, businesses that previously held spots 4-7 will become less visible. Businesses in cities and large towns will likely feel this effect more than those in small towns and those with few competitors.
Some businesses will find improvement because they will rank above generic directories that might have ranked better in the old system.
What can a small business owner do to improve the visibility of their website?
- Make sure that your business listing is accurate and complete
- Create a compelling description of your business
- Reviews are a greater piece of the results algorithm, so actively pursue positive reviews from your customers
- Adding photos or videos could benefit some businesses
As these changes were just made in the past week, it may take some time for all of the repercussions to be felt.
